Who Is John James? A Voter's Guide to Michigan's Junior Senator
A West Point graduate, Army Black Hawk pilot, and two-time Senate candidate, James won his seat in 2024 and is now serving his first term representing Michigan in Washington.
WASHINGTON / JACKSON, Mich. — John James is Michigan's junior U.S. Senator, having won election in 2024 after two previous Senate bids in 2018 and 2020. He is a Republican representing the full state of Michigan in Washington. Before entering politics, James had a career in the military and in business.
James is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as an Army Black Hawk helicopter pilot, including a combat deployment to Iraq. After leaving active duty, he returned to Michigan and became president of James Group International, a supply chain and logistics company founded by his father in Detroit.
His 2018 Senate campaign against incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow drew national attention and significant fundraising despite falling short. He ran again in 2020 against Gary Peters in one of the most expensive Senate races in the country that cycle, losing by a narrow margin. In 2024, he ran for the open seat created by Stabenow's retirement and won.
In the Senate, James has positioned himself as a conservative aligned with the Republican mainstream. He has emphasized veterans' issues, economic development, and manufacturing — themes consistent with his military background and his family's business history in Detroit.
James is not on the ballot in 2026. His Senate term runs through 2030. The open Michigan Senate seat on the 2026 ballot — the one previously held by Peters — is the race between Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed.
James grew up in the Detroit area and has spoken publicly about his faith and his family's roots in Michigan. He and his wife Lara have children and have remained connected to the state throughout his political career.
